1. Start small
Trying to tackle your entire home at once is a recipe for overwhelm. Instead, start with one room or one area of a room. Once you’ve completed that, move on to the next. If it helps you can make a list of areas you want to clear in a room so you get to check them off as you go and give yourself mini-achievements. Here is a to do list you could use
2. Purge ruthlessly
The less stuff you have, the easier it is to keep your home organised. Go through your belongings and get rid of anything you no longer need or use. Be honest with yourself about what you truly need and what’s just taking up space. Getting rid of things doesn’t mean things need to go in the trash though. You can donate to charity, gift to friends or sell on eBay or other resale sites to reclaim some money. If an item isn’t bringing you joy any more, you can give it a chance to brighten someone else’s world.
3. Create a System
Everything in your home should have a designated spot. Create a system for where things go and stick to it. For example, designate a spot for your keys and always put them there when you come home. This can help to reduce the stress of keeping the house tidy as items will routinely be put away. Its also useful if you have a helping hand and can tell others where things needs to go. Having a system can also help with future purchases for your home space. This will allow you to think about the functional use of an item as well as its aesthetic.
4. Use Vertical Space
Don’t overlook your walls and ceiling as potential storage space. Install shelves, hooks, and other storage solutions to maximize your vertical space. There are so many storage solutions which can offer a personal sense of style as well as providing function. Lets be honest though, not all items in the home offer style , but some built in storage which suits your home decor can be a useful way to create a clear space.
5. Invest in Good Storage Solutions
Having the right storage solutions can make all the difference in keeping your home organized. Invest in things like storage bins, baskets, and drawer organisers to keep things tidy. Having robust storage is a must. For some spaces, stackable storage is useful and maximises space.
6. Label Everything
Labels can make it easy to find what you need quickly. Label your storage bins and boxes so you know exactly what’s inside. This also helps to reinforce your system of everything having a designated space in your system. There are many options for creating labels, from the humble Sharpie to the bespoke Cricut systems. Many homeware stores now offer pre-labelled containers for general household items to help with this function.
7. Make use of furniture
Furniture can do double duty as storage. Choose pieces that have built-in storage, like an ottoman with a hidden compartment or a bed with drawers underneath. In the living room you can opt for a footstool with in build storage. This is particularly useful if you have a small space, but still enjoy your creature comforts.
8. Create a daily routine
Get into the habit of doing a quick clean-up every day. Spend 15-20 minutes tidying up and putting things away. This will help prevent clutter from building up. As you build on your routine and create a purposeful space for items, you may find that this time reduces as items are routinely put away after use. I’ve found that clearing in the evening creates a clear home to wake up to, and forms part of my evening relaxation routine which helps with sleep health. Writing down the routine in a journal can also help to stay focussed.
9. Don’t forget about digital clutter:
Clutter isn’t just physical. Take some time to organize your digital files and declutter your email inbox. Are you finding that you routinely delete some emails without opening them? Time to unsubscribe! Maybe you take a lot of photos but never seem to do much with them. You could create photo albums making it easier to create digital or printed projects of your important memories. You can also purge those blurry photos using up storage space.
10. Stay consistent
Once you’ve organised your home, it’s important to stay consistent with your system. Take a few minutes each day to put things back where they belong and stay on top of clutter before it gets out of hand. This is more than just routine as you may have an event, such as a party or guests that throws some things out of balance.
Organising your home like a pro takes time and effort, but the benefits are well worth it. By following these tips, you’ll be on your way to a clutter-free, stress-free home in no time.
